i am getting ready to fly the friendly skies and spend the weekend in NYC, visiting a wonderful friend. I met Karin in Italy in 2003 (i think?) when we both lived there. She came from Germany, and we ended up in the same Italian language class, where she excelled and I fumbled along. We spent several months at cafes and wandering around Turin and Rome and Florence, and I can hardly believe now that such sentences can come from my mouth, or fingers, or brain. But, yes, I was very fortunate to have been able to spend a good amount of time in Italy, and even more fortunate to have made a long-lasting friendship with such a great person. We manage to see each other every few years now that she is living in New York, and I can't wait to sit at a cafe with her and dish the dirt!
See you soon, Karin!

custom pillows

aha! I finally sat down and read the manual to discover why i couldn't get any images to download from the camera i have been borrowing. of course it was a simple thing that i was overlooking, the kind of simple thing that is so simple you would never check it because there is no way you would have overlooked it in the first place. so, now we have pictures to go with words.

last week I delivered a pair of pillows to a local customer, who asked me to create the pillows using her grandmother's linens. Her grandmother had given her a collection of linens that she had embroidered many years ago, but time left its mark with various stains and stages of deterioration.

I hand washed the linens to remove what I could of the stains, and then I carefully cut them up and sewed it back together. The result was a sort of collage, and I loved the process of making something so different. My customer loved them, too, so I am especially happy for that!

The second custom order was completely different:

This customer was interested in a certain color palette, and wanted to have something slightly more tailored, or formal, than some of my other designs. I chose a range of greys with a hit of red to spice it up. BAM!

nyc, here i come

I forgot to mention that I am heading to New York next week! I will be there from Thursday to Sunday and will stay in the Fort Greene neighborhood. If any of you lovelies have some tips, let me know.

the images above were taken last time I was there, which was in the winter of 2005. I have only been to New York in the winter, so to be there in May will be quite the treat. I have a few shops I definitely want to swing into, and I know ICFF will be going on. I have all of Friday to wander by my lonesome, so if any of my NYC peeps are reading this - i hope to see you!

ah!

guys! i'm so sorry i have been a total mess this week. i really do have things to share with you, but some sort of cold or other type of sickness has invaded my body these last few days and i am just down for the count. i have written several posts, but they are just so not what i want to share here, so none of them made the cut to actually be published. i will be back - i hope you will too!
things that have happened recently:
1. danced to a lot of polka at a wedding.
2. took some pics of identical newborn twins
3. tried acupuncture for the first time
4. experimented with a fancy digital SLR camera, from which I can not seem to extract any photos.
5. tom sold his awesome '81 Mercedes, the one that he would pick me up in for our first dates. a single tear rolled down my cheek as i watched some dude from chicago load it onto a trailer to give to his father, who once owned the same model.
6. went to see Flight of the Conchords and MIA

Nori wants you to play with him:

wisconsin foodie

wisconsin foodie is a brand new half-hour television show promoting Wisconsin's unique culinary offerings. Produced by Arthur Ircink, the show is focused on all the goodies that Wisconsin has to offer, with a sharp focus on Milwaukee to start and a look to expand throughout our fine state.
The reason this show is so different is not only the way that it is filmed and produced, but that it will feature local food production. We will get to see where our food comes from, how it makes its way onto our plates, and who has their hand in that process. It will take a look at the kitchens of our favorite restaurants, and share some great recipes along the way.

Sure, I am a tiny bit biased because most of the people involved are friends of mine and I designed the logo, BUT it is truly a great idea and I know it will do well.

Please join us tomorrow night, May 8, at the Milwaukee Public Market from 6-8pm to celebrate the launch of the show.
The first episode will air this Saturday, May 10, on Channel 12 at 12:00pm - tune in!

monday. I have 2.5 more days at my current job, and then it is on to bigger and better things! If anyone knows what those things are, let me know because I am kind of all over the place right now.
Good news is that I have completed my first custom pillow order! The pillows will be going to their new home at the end of the week, so I will try to share some sneak peeks soon - but not until their new owner sees them first!

i have just added a new element to my blog, and that is the list of links you will see to the right >>
This list is not yet complete, but it is a lengthy foray* into what i pass my time with when i need inspiration or just something to look at while I eat breakfast. there is some good stuff over there, so check it out when you have some time!

I wish I had been able to snatch one of these babies up recently:

Little Friends of Printmaking are a lovely couple in Milwaukee who make rad prints. I already own a couple of their prints, but I also want this one! All sold out over at tiny showcase.
