micaela o'herlihy / paper boat

If you haven't yet been to Paper Boat, you have one more month to do so. Sadly, Faythe and Kim are closing their doors on May 31st, another casualty of the current economic black cloud.
I stopped by a couple of weeks ago for the opening of the final (sniffle, sniffle) show, and I would say it is one of the best shows I have seen there. Local artist Micaela O'Herlihy has created portraits of the bullies her 10-year old son encounters at his school. The most beautiful thing about the work, other than the portraits themselves, is the sentiment and emotion behind each one. The artist statement said that she started this project with her son to help him deal with and process his feelings about the fact that he was being bullied. Each painting was accompanied by a hand-written explanation from her son about who each kid was and what they do to bully him. It really touched my heart and excited my brain. Should you go check it out? Yes.

I just renewed my McSweeneys subscription, and i am very excited. For those of you unfamiliar with McSweeneys, it is an independent publishing house that puts out amazingly creative books, journals, and films on a quarterly basis. They way they bind the books (or the lack of binding) is half the reason I choose to subscribe. The collection of writing is one thing, but the presentation is the deal maker. Times are tough, but a good book will be a welcome respite when i can no longer afford to leave the house anyway. Plus, it gives me something to search the mail for every few months, and it's always a surprise!

storms

storms and spring

finished a new painting this week! I'll show the whole thing once the sun comes out again and I can get better images.
something on my "to-do" list is to re-take all the photos on my etsy site and just overhaul the whole thing. I am really looking forward to doing that and getting new stuff posted and just getting reorganized in the studio.

in other news, i lost my iPod shuffle. I am about to buy a new one, but I wondered if any of you would like to do a trade? Perhaps you have upgraded to a new version or just have an extra one taking up space - email me if you want to strike a deal...

have a lovely thursday. We are supposed to have great weather tomorrow and I am going to dust off my bike and hit the road. Hooray for fresh air and beautiful sunlight!

artist Aaron Rose will be at hot pop (located on Broadway in Milwaukee's Third Ward) tonight from 7 - 10 to talk about his work - i'm going to try to be there, are you?

hey guys, check out my interview over at Pattern Pulp! It makes me feel very official and was an awesome way to end a dumb week. Some weeks are dumb, what can you do? This totally makes up for it though. Thanks Shayna!
