begin again

A beautiful poppy from my mom's garden a couple of weeks ago.

This week is jam packed with work, which is a good thing for sure. It's also going to be the hottest week yet, so I will likely be out enjoying every bit of it. Starting....now!

still here

Well hello there. I am still here and am still making things and daydreaming about things to make, but I have been out of the blog loop!

Sadly, I neglected to photograph a big project that I delivered yesterday. It was a big linen piece that was painted with layers of color and embroidered with bright spots and it made me think of a million new things and you will just have to imagine it.

I am in the midst of making some big career-path decisions, and frankly I am nervous. A lot of art bloggers choose not to discuss the reality of how they are able to do what they do - haven't you wondered how we are able to make a living off of making things? Is it realistic to think that someone could spend hours and hours making an item, only to sell it for a fraction of what it should be worth?

When Tom and I went to see the premiere of "Handmade Nation", I left feeling happy that someone put a stamp on the handmade movement, qualifying it as a genuine moment in art history that we are living in, that is reflected in our economy and is being replicated by the big box stores and chains as though it were a trend rather than a way of life. But as we walked away from the theater, Tom commented "It's funny that not one artist talked about how they are actually living, how they are able to fund what they are doing and still pay the bills." No one mentioned a second job or student loans or reliance on a significant other. Is that honest, or just no one's business?

Just something to think about.

wednesday

Looks like we will have a break from the dreary weather today! There is so much to pack in to a day like this and I am so glad to be up and at 'em nice and early.
I am working on something that I really like too, which I hope to show soon.

Today's To Do:
• Keep working on Thing 1
• Bike Ride
• Take photos of neighborhood Fox family. I saw them at around 8:30am yesterday, so I think I will check the scene at the same time today.
• Yard Work
• Baked scallops for dinner
• Get a haricut? okay, that is probably too much for one day. There is so much more to add, but realistically I will get the above done, plus some paper shuffling and phone calling.

I know, you are all excited about this extraordinary list, but some weeks are all business. I think next week will be more entertaining...

tote bag

Farmer's Market season is upon us, so I have been experimenting with tote bags. I made one above per my procrastination-free promise of yesterday, but there are some unfortunate mistakes so I will not be giving it away as intended. It's good to experiment like this - I am learning something new with each oops moment, and this one is good enough for me to use. I started a new one this morning that I think will be better. I made the pattern up as I went along, but it's pretty darn simple. I am not lining these at all - maybe some of you have thoughts on this - if I were to start selling them (once I master the pattern) is it necessary to line them? It would look nicer, but then the price would have to go up and I don't know if they would move at the price reflective of the time spent making each one. I'm sure after I make a few the time spent will be reduced though...

misewell

Good morning!
Today I would like to highlight the beautiful work of Misewell.

Comprised of brothers Vincent and Paul Georgeson, Misewell creates modern furniture with a touch of industrial strength.

I am drawn to their use of materials - gorgeous solid wood, powder-coated aluminum and steel. Pared down to the minimum, but reinforced with strong lines and a perfect selection of color options. I really couldn't be happier to have stumbled across them.

Apparently I have had my head in the sand though - they proudly took home the New Designer Award at this year's ICFF and after googling them last night, I see that they have been featured on other design blogs.
Of course, part of why I love them is that they are based in Milwaukee, and I love to see my fellow Milwaukeeans succeed.

Check out and purchase their work here: Misewell

keep up the pace

hello friends. do you ever have a day of total equilibrium? I am having that day, but not in a necessarily good way. sort of good. Today is the kind of day in which I have a million ideas, and am struck with the inability to move forward on any of them. After this post I am starting my day over, complete with coffee and not with any form of procrastination. To hold myself to this promise, i pledge to share with you what I am about to work on in the morning. like homework.

Fortunately, I did get the important stuff done: meeting with a client, resumés sent out, new item added to my etsy shop, delivered lunch to my bf (ha! i never really do that but he got lucky today), and i did 7 push-ups. what? that's right, 7. I also investigated some fantastic local designers and i will point you their way tomorrow too - I just felt a wave of inspiration and i have to ride it.

see you soon...

p.s. did I mention that there is new stuff in my shop? Check it check it out!
p.p.s I have just decided that all future posts shall have correct usage of capitalization, but I will stick with my sometimes-sloppy sentence structure, because this is my site and I talks how I wants to talk.
